Lately I had been working on a “Frankenstein” desk that I put together with what I had. It worked, but it was a visual mess and didn't invite me to sit down and concentrate. So I took a weekend to do a thorough renovation: make it look cool, but above all make it comfortable and functional for rubbing, recording and editing without fighting with the environment.
What I changed and why
* The basis of the setup
+ I played it safe: two ALEX drawer units from IKEA for organization and support, an ECKBACKEN countertop as a large surface and a solid metal structure as a skeleton. With that I achieved a long, stable desk with real space to work without moving things every now and then.
+ The drawers saved my order: peripherals, cables, notebooks, tools... everything with its place. Zero visual noise above the table.
* Function before façade (but with façade)
+ The goal was for the setup to feel light. Clean surface, few visible elements and a simple palette. Thus, when I turn on the computer, the focus is on the work and not on the fixture.
+ I looked for aesthetics to accompany: textures and colors that do not distract, but that look good on camera when I record.
*No-turn ergonomics
+ Comfortable height for long hours of typing, healthy screen distance and space to support wrists. Nothing extravagant: basics done well make all the difference at the end of the day.
* Wiring and breathing of space
+ Organized and routed cables so everything is close at hand but out of sight. Less knots, less dust, less stress. The desk breathes and so do I.
* The PC in tune with the desktop
+ I adjusted the location and left the computer integrated with the setup style. Silent, accessible for maintenance and without blocking air flow. Make it look good and perform.
What this change left me
* I measured first, I bought later. Knowing the actual space prevented returns and headaches.
* Few furniture, but solid. I prefer a firm base than a thousand loose bugs.
* Ergonomics alone pays for the effort: less fatigue, more hours of concentration.
* Wiring is not glamorous… but it is 50% of the result.
* Leave room for growth: better to anticipate where your future monitors or external drives will live.

I was very happy with the upgrade. It's not just that “it looks nice”: now I sit down and start hobnobbing without excuses, with everything at hand and without fuss.
